      Hi all!

I have been grooming a 5 yr old shihtzu for the past 3 yrs.  Over the course of the grooming there has been a gapping weeping hole under the chin of this dog.  It will not heal.  The owners have tried antibiotics.  They have had seveal vet visits to no avail.  The veterinarian is now saying they feel it is an abcess that is not healing and ths is caused possibly by bad teeth which they can remove.  They also suggested a biopsy.
I am attaching a photo of this leasion in hopes one of you have come acrss the same thing so I can give the owners some idea...
      Thanks in advance!

An abcessed tooth is the first thing that came to mind when you said it was a wound in the mouth area that would not heal.

I groomed a Sheltie with something similar. At first it just looked like a small scrath type wound. She took her in and and had it checked and that was the diagnosis. After a month or so, it had not healed and I suggested she have it rechecked. It was odd, when it first appeared she rushed her to the Vet to have it checked, even though it just appeared to be a small cut, something I would have treated with basic first aid.

Yet, when it didn't heal, she didn't think about having it rechecked until I suggested it?  It was a bad tooth. They did a dental, pulled the tooth, a course of antibiotics and it was soon healed.

With the sheltie, it was more towards the top of the muzzle, sort of near where you would clip under the eyes. It wasn't necessarily really close to where you think of when you think tooth.

I think, the infection goes down into the bone and that's where it can appear farther from the teeth?
